St. David’s Foundation announces over $33 million in grants for safety net clinics; other important healthcare needs

Austin—Healthcare. It’s a hotly debated topic both on the national level and here at home in Texas. Amid all the debate, pros and cons, and facts and figures, one truism remains: every day, people need a wide range of basic healthcare services: check-ups, prenatal care, management of chronic illnesses like diabetes, stroke prevention, and many other needs.

Today there’s good news in meeting these needs, for low income Central Texans who cannot afford healthcare.

St. David’s Foundation is announcing that it is providing over $12 million in grants to local safety net clinics, where most low income Central Texans receive basic healthcare services for themselves and their families.

From fresh commentary by UT coaches to gourmet repasts by award-wining chefs, to conversations with key leaders in the community, Toast of the Town 2017 brings a tempting range of options for participants.

 Toast of the Town events raise funds for the Neal Kocurek Scholarship Fund for Central Texas, benefiting area students who are pursuing careers in healthcare. Last year’s Toast of the Town raised over $1 million, funding 54 generous scholarships for deserving young aspirants.

Extended Coverage Plans for College Baseball on Longhorn Network

LHN LogoLonghorn Network swings into baseball conference play this week with extended coverage plans for marquee matchups and debut plans for the new head coach’s show, as the team plays out the remainder of the schedule.

 LHN will surround today’s Texas A&M at Texas baseball game with a special Texas Baseball GameDay pre-game show at 6 p.m. featuring Lowell Galindo, Keith Moreland and Greg Swindell, prior to the network’s game coverage at 6:30 p.m. Texas A&M at Texas is one of four marquee matchups airing on LHN that Texas Baseball GameDay is highlighting this season. The show previously preceded the UCLA game and will also air prior to Oklahoma on April 8 and West Virginia on May 19.

 In addition to the Texas Baseball GameDay shows slated, the Longhorns’ new Head Coach David Pierce will sit down with LHN every Wednesday in studio for Game Plan with David Pierce at 8 p.m. CT, starting March 29.

The decked-out musicians will number into the tens of dozens—a rainbow-colored brass and drum spectacle providing the authentic sounds of Mardi Gras to fill the air of downtown Austin.

Doors open at 5 pm at 3TEN, and the 2nd Line will commence on the 3TEN patio promptly at 6 pm. The musical line will proceed around the 2nd Street block and back to 3TEN where the gaggle of brass & drums will take over the 3TEN stage before the funky METERS show at ACL Live.

St. David’s Foundation Announces Grants of over $20 million, Including Financial Support for Healthcare-Related Infrastructure Needs

 SDF logoAUSTIN, Texas—St. David’s Foundation announced today that it is awarding grants aimed at supporting future infrastructure needs at key charitable organizations, to meet the demands of Central Texas’ unprecedented population growth.

 With $5.2 million in capital grants, St. David’s Foundation is extending financial support to many healthcare-related nonprofits who are facing a much greater demand for their services. Among these grants are funds for such projects as building out a facility for Meals on Wheels Central Texas; a new facility for Mobile Loaves and Fishes’ Community First Village; supporting creation of specialized housing for Austinites with mental illness with Austin Travis County Integral Care; and providing vans to transport seniors, among other efforts. “As our population grows, we are seeing an escalating demand for more healthcare-related services for our rapidly growing community. By partnering with organizations who are developing facilities and programs to address future healthcare needs, from mental health to homelessness to the needs of low income families, we hope to anticipate future demands and provide targeted solutions,” said Earl Maxwell, CEO of St. David’s Foundation.

In addition to the capital grants, St. David’s Foundation announced over $15 million in grants to area nonprofits who provide a range of healthcare-related services to the community, providing support for preventative programs like Marathon Kids and the Sustainable Food Center; providing scholarships and grants for professionals pursuing healthcare careers, and those serving underprivileged populations, as well as for groups serving the elderly and families dealing with mental health challenges

Austin Mayor Steve Adler presents Quiet Company + Jai Malano + Beth Chrisman at 3TEN ACL Live; Benefiting ATX6

 Quiet Company, an Austin favorite, has become a staple in the music scene with their unique indie-rock sound. They were named Rock Band of the Year at SXSW 2014, adding to their previously won 10 Austin Music Awards. Their eclectic sound continues in their most recent, full-length album, “Transgressor”.

10 Nonprofit Agencies with Innovative Healthcare Solutions Awarded

St. David’s Foundation Opportunity Grants of nearly $1 million

Austin– 2016sdflogosmallerOpportunity Grants, a new initiative by St. David’s Foundation, are aimed at collaborative, creative new approaches to addressing a wide range of health needs across Central Texas. Several of the grants will address the unique physical and mental health needs of Central Texas youth in innovative ways.

Among the highlights of the 10 grants being announced:

  • E-cigarette prevention program to be carried out in middle schools across the area (CATCH Global Foundation)
  • Assistance for recovery from substance abuse for adolescents and young adults (Communities for Recovery)
  • Technology to streamline vision screening and clinical follow up care for school children (Half Helen Foundation)
  • Mental illness support group for teens and pre-teens (NAMI Austin)
  • Support and counseling for LGBT youth in area high needs schools (Out Youth)
  • Training and support for Central Texas mental health service providers who serve a youth population (Texas Network of Youth Services)

In addition to these youth-related grants, funding is being provided for a peer support and employment program in East Austin for adults with mental illness, a healthy food pantry project, mental health services for adults seeking to earn a high school diploma, and for a health coach hotline and digital health platform to support sustainable health behavior change.

Longhorn Network to Air Iowa State at Texas Football Game
ESPN3 to Carry Halftime Performance

LHN LogoLonghorn Network, the 24-hour network devoted to The University of Texas, is set to televise the Iowa State at Texas football game on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. CT

Lowell Galindo will provide play-by-play for the game alongside analysts Ahmad Brooks and Keith Moreland. ESPN’s Dawn Davenport will provide additional reporting throughout the telecast.

The game will also be made available on Cyclones.tv, Iowa State’s official digital and cable network.

The October 15 matchup marks the 14th Texas football game to air on LHN. LONGTIME GENERAL MANAGER HARGETT TO RETIRE FROM UTILITY     

ETEC LogoEdd Hargett, General Manager of East Texas Electric Cooperative since 2005, plans to retire from the cooperative on June 30th.

Honored June 24th at a special ceremony during ETEC’s annual membership meeting in Nacogdoches, Hargett thanked his co-workers and family for their support during his years leading the regional electric cooperative. In attendance at the recognition ceremony were Hargett’s wife, Shirley, his two sons and daughter, and numerous other family members, with a total attendance of about 130 guests.

During the ceremony, several letters of congratulations were presented, from R.C. Slocum, former head coach at Texas A&M; Gene Stallings, also a former head coach at A&M; John Sharp, Chancellor of the Texas A&M University System; Bill Youngkin, from the Association of Former Students at A&M, a personal note from former Governor Rick Perry; and a proclamation signed by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. St. David’s Foundation Announces $1 Million Grant to Capital Area Food Bank           
Funding to support Food Bank efforts to assist elderly in Central Texas

StD Foundation logoAUSTIN, Texas— In a special holiday- themed check presentation to be held at the Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB), St. David’s Foundation is announcing today it is awarding $1 million to help complete a new and expanded food bank facility.

With the news of this major financial boost, CAFB moves closer to completion of the new facility, currently under construction in southeast Austin.

St. David’s Foundation CEO Earl Maxwell will present CAFB CEO and President Hank Perret with the gift, which will enable the food bank to expand its Healthy Options Program for the Elderly (HOPE), a program that provides critical food assistance to needy elderly residents across Central Texas. Longhorn Network Takes Home Lone Star Chapter EMMY Awards 

For the fourth straight year, Longhorn Network, ESPN’S 24-hour network devoted to the University of Texas, has won recognition from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Lone Star Chapter.

The network has won EMMYs every year for which it has been eligible, since its launch in 2011.

Longhorn Network to Air Kansas at Texas Football Game

Longhorn Network, the 24-hour network devoted to The University of Texas, is set to televise the Kansas at Texas football game presented by My All-American on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. CT.

Anish Shroff will provide play-by-play for the game alongside analysts Ahmad Brooksand Keith Moreland. LHN’s Jane Slater will provide additional reporting throughout the telecast.

LHN is the exclusive national distributor of the game, except within the state of Kansas and the Kansas City DMA, where the game also will be aired live via the Jayhawk Television Network.

The November 7 matchup will mark the 12th Texas football game to air on LHN. It will be surrounded by exclusive Longhorn Network programming, including Texas GameDay, the two-and-a-half hour live pregame show from Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium with host Lowell Galindo, and former Longhorns David Thomas, Vince Young and Ricky Williams. Longhorn Network to Debut New Show All-22
New preview show joins full slate of football programming

In anticipation of the Texas football season, Longhorn Network, ESPN’s 24-hour network devoted to the University of Texas, kicks off its 2015 football programming slate this week. The line-up is highlighted with the debut of All-22, a new weekly preview show, airing Thursdays at 8 p.m. CT. Hosted by Lowell Galindo, All-22 features analyst David Thomas breaking down game film to analyze how Texas stacks up against the next opponent.

Thomas will examine film from the same viewpoint as coaches in their game preparation, using the high camera angle that shows “All 22” players on the field. His expertise will give fans an inside look at the X’s and O’s that will help determine the offensive and defensive game plans. All-22 will air on Thursdays before Texas football games throughout the season.

New Set Revealed for Longhorn Network Pregame Show Texas GameDay

Texas GameDay, Longhorn Network’s college football pregame show, is set to air from two new locations this year. Beginning Saturday, Sept.12, the show is live at the corner of 23rd and Dedman (map) two-and-a-half hours before every home game. Positioned outside of Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium, Gate 25, the new set will be surrounded by UT fandom and provides a prime view as players and coaches make their entrance into the stadium during the “Texas Stampede”. For the last hour, the show transitions to a sideline set as the stands fill and the team warms up prior to kick off.

“The new location allows us to even further illuminate the experience of Texas football and directly engage with fans on game day,” said Tom McCollum, LHN coordinating producer. “We are still able to bring viewers into the stadium and provide a unique vantage point with the sideline flex-set, while also having more interaction with fans outside the gates prior to the game.”

Longhorn Network Hires Alex Loeb

Longhorn Network has hired former ESPN host Alex Loeb to join the Austin-based studio team of Lowell Galindo and reporter Jane Slater beginning August 31.

Loeb joins the network after spending the past two years hosting a daytime sports show on The Horn 104.9 in Austin, Texas. Before that, Loeb spent four years as a commentator at ESPN, working on numerous shows and platforms. He brings an in-depth of knowledge of Texas sports and television experience.

“Alex has established credibility with the Texas fanbase and terrific skills as an in-depth interviewer,” said Tom McCollum, LHN coordinating producer. “He fits a unique skill set required to serve Longhorn Network viewers.” Full Release (PDF)

SC Featured has Story of Former Green Beret Trying to Make Seahawks

ESPN’s SC Featured will tell the inspiring story of Seattle Seahawks long snapper and former Green Beret Nate Boyer, also a former Texas Longhorn player, in a segment airing on the Sunday, Aug. 9, editions of ESPN SportsCenter.

A new NFL season is underway and hundreds of athletes are reporting to training camps – all chasing a dream of playing professional football. In Seattle, 34-year-old rookie Boyer is perhaps the longest of shots, having never played a snap of football until he walked on at Texas as a 29-year-old freshman five years ago. But Boyer, a native of Oak Ridge, Tenn., has spent his life making the impossible possible and has never faced a challenge he couldn’t conquer. Marty Smith reports for SC Featured.

St. David’s Foundation Provides Grants Totaling Nearly $27 Million for Health Care Needs
Local foundation invests record amount in grants to safety net clinics, mental health needs and dental care

StD Foundation logoAustin–St. David’s Foundation today announced grants totaling $26,840,492 that are being awarded to over 35 local nonprofit organizations who provide a variety of health care–related services in central Texas.

“With this precedent-setting amount, St. David’s is investing significant funds in addressing some of the most pressing health care needs in our community,” said Earl Maxwell, CEO of St. David’s Foundation.

In grants made each June, the Foundation provides funding to three of its six focus areas: Healthy People, Healthy Minds and Healthy Smiles. Healthy People is focused on funding for safety net clinics that provide a range of medical services to low income members of the community. the R.C. Thomas Hydroelectric Project at Lake Livingston Dam in Polk County, Texas.

Nacogdoches, TX–November 24, 2014 – East Texas Electric Cooperative and Northeast Texas Electric Cooperative have joined forces to bring 101.2 MW of renewable wind energy into the mix for their member-owned cooperatives in east Texas. The two Texas electric cooperatives have signed Renewable Energy Purchase Agreements (REPAs) for wind generation from Apex Clean Energy subsidiary Grant Wind, LLC. LONGHORN NETWORK TO AIR EVERY NO.2 TEXAS VOLLEYBALL HOME MATCH

LHN LogoGet ready for the return of Texas Volleyball to Longhorn Network, ESPN’s 24-hour network devoted to the University of Texas. Coverage of the team ranked second in the nation begins Saturday, Aug. 23 at 11 a.m. CT with the Orange and White Scrimmage at Gregory Gym, followed by the home opener Friday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. against Arizona.

The network will televise all home matches, including matchups against Big 12 opponents Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas and Oklahoma. LONGHORN NETWORK TO AIR 10 TEXAS SOCCER GAMES DURING 2014 SEASON

LHN LogoThe 2014 soccer season is here, and Longhorn Network, ESPN’s 24-hour network devoted to The University of Texas, will air all UT home games exclusively from Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field. Coverage begins Friday, Aug. 15 at 7:30 p.m. CT, with a preseason exhibition game against Incarnate Word.

The regular season opener will be played Friday, Aug. 29 at 7:30 p.m. against Arkansas. Other highlights include a matchup with defending national champion UCLA on Friday, Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m., and Big 12 opponents Texas Tech, West Virginia, Kansas and Oklahoma State. ‘GREATEST OF ALL TIME’ HATCH CHILE FEST COMING TO CENTRAL MARKET
19th annual festival to be held Aug. 6-19 in all locations

CMCentral Market will host its 19th annual Hatch Chile Festival, taking place August 6-19, 2014.

The festival is a celebration of the seasonal, world-famous peppers from Hatch, New Mexico that are harvested only a few weeks out of the year and considered by foodies to be a rare culinary treat. Central Market will be receiving 125-plus tons of the peppers beginning in early August.

Rated at 1,000 – 2,500 Scoville heat units, the pepper is not particularly spicy (the jalapeño pepper is rated at 5,000), however, it packs a punch with flavor. Hatch chiles are also vitamin-rich, low in calories, fat, sodium and cholesterol, making them a healthy addition to any diet. Full Release (PDF)

ST. DAVID’S FOUNDATION GRANTS $8.9 MILLION TO FUND MENTAL HEALTH CENTER
Center to provide psychiatric crisis care in Travis County

St. David’s Foundation announced today that it has approved $8.9 million to develop an innovative mental health center in Austin. To be directed by Austin Travis County Integral Care, the center will provide a community-based, short-term psychiatric treatment option for individuals experiencing a mental health crisis. The center will be built on land provided by Central Health at the intersection of Montopolis Drive and Ben White Blvd. at 2901 Montopolis Drive, in southeast Austin.

“The Foundation is pleased to support a strong, sustainable, community solution to a long-standing community problem,” said Earl Maxwell, CEO of the Foundation. “Through the center’s crisis services, we hope to better serve Austin residents who struggle with mental illness.” Full Release (PDF)

AUSTIN — St. David’s Foundation announced today that it has approved $16.6 million in grants to benefit almost 30 local organizations that provide critical health care services to Central Texans. This is the first round of biannual grants for 2014 to be distributed by the Foundation, the second of which will take place in December.

St. David’s Foundation to present funds at special awards luncheon

AUSTIN— In support of this year’s Amplify Austin effort, St. David’s Foundation is announcing grants totaling $875,000 to more than 40 health care related nonprofits and agencies. Amplify Austin’s 2014 fundraising efforts were a huge success, with a goal of raising $4 million in donations to Austin nonprofits in 24 hours. The people of Austin rose to the occasion, donating a record $5.7 million, more than doubling last year’s total. 60 TEXAS BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL GAMES SET TO AIR ON LONGHORN NETWORK

The 2014 spring season is here and for the third year more than 60 Texas baseball and softball games will air on Longhorn Network (LHN), the 24/7 University of Texas network.

Coverage begins Saturday, Feb. 1, at noon CT, with the annual baseball Alumni Game at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Participating alumni include Huston Street, Brandon Workman, Drew Stubbs, and others from the illustrious Lifetime Longhorn ranks.
